Ebook About
From Bourbon Street to Pirate’s Alley and beyond—a local historian takes you on a walking tour of the historic French Quarter in New Orleans.   Walking through the French Quarter can overwhelm the senses—and the imagination. The experience is much more meaningful with knowledge of the area’s colorful history. For instance, the infamous 1890 “separate but equal” legal doctrine justifying racial segregation was upheld by the Louisiana Supreme Court at the Cabildo on Jackson Square. In the mid-twentieth century, a young Lee Harvey Oswald called Exchange Alley home. One of New Orleans’s favorite cocktails—the sazerac—would not exist if Antoine Peychaud had not served his legendary bitters with cognac from his famous apothecary at 437 Royal. Local author Andy Peter Antippas presents a walking history of the Vieux Carre, one alley, corner and street at a time.

Book A Guide to the Historic French Quarter (History & Guide) Review :

I'm surprised and a bit disappointed by this book. It would be more appropriate to call it "A Walk Down Historic Royal Street" because that's mainly what it covers. Virtually the entire book is a tour of Royal Street in the French Quarter from end to end with a few side trips that take you a block or two away from Royal Street. Other than that, the only exceptions are a very short chapter of the Moon Walk and another short chapter at the end of the book about Esplanade to the U.S. Mint and French Market. That leaves the vast majority of the French Quarter completely unmentioned, which is a shame, in my opinion. The title of the book is misleading, to put it mildly. If you are looking for a book about the entire French Quarter, look elsewhere. I'm still looking for such a book. There's so much more of interest in the French Quarter than Royal Street.I'm a bit bewildered by the positive reviews here because none of those reviewers seemed to have noticed that this book only covers a very small part of the French Quarter.BTW, there are numerous errors in the book but not enough that it's a big issue. At least one address is listed that never existed and never did exist. I have no idea how that error crept into the book because that address follows and existing address that he mentions so it's not a typo. The block ends before it every reaches the number the author mentions as a building of interest. But anyone using this book while touring the French Quarter is probably interested in historical accuracy so they should be warned. Little errors occur frequently in the book. As just one example, on page 65, the author states that Jackson Square was named in Andrew Jackson's honor in 1851. Actually, it was named in his honor in 1815. The statue of Jackson was placed in Jackson Square in 1851. No big deal but I like to be able to trust information in books like this.It would also have been nice if more of a physical description of the buildings was included to help the reader identify the buildings now because many buildings in the FQ do not have their addresses marked. In one case, the author describes a building as being one of the only buildings in the FQ that is set back from the street with its courtyard in front and yet the building is built right on the street like every other building on the block and there is no courtyard in front. This could cause some head-scratching for the tourist using this book as they walk Royal Street. The only thing I can think of is that an aerial view shows that there is a building set behind the building on the street but the building on the street appears to be very old. Visitors can't see the rear building from the street if that's what the author is referring to. It almost seems as if the author never actually saw the building he is writing about but rather read some account of a building that is behind the building that visitors will see. He never mentions the buildings you will actually see at that address. That's just another example of errors in the book. For a small book like this, there really is no excuse for these types of errors, in my opinion. I found several of them when I first received the book and quickly perused the pages before reading it. A quick proof-read by someone who lives in the FQ would have caught the errors. If I can spot numerous errors just while scanning over the book before reading it in detail, that's not a good sign, especially since I know very little about the FQ and live in northern Illinois.
Admittedly, I read this at home while not in New Orleans. It would be perfect to read this while actually walking in the French Quarter. It explains the history of many of the buildings. I will have to take this with me on my next visit.
